Introduction

The economy is bad. That's a fact of life for all Americans right now. Add to this the disaster in The Gulf of Mexico, and things are even worse, especially for Alabamaians and other Gulf Coast state residents. Not only does the lack of extra cash limit our vacations and fun weekend activities, but now the oil spill is keeping people away from our beautiful beaches.
So, what can we do?
Lucky for those of us living in the great state of Alabama, the fun doesn't have to stop. You may not know it, but our state offers lots of fun things to do for not much money. The fun is right in your back yard, you've just got to find it. Or, better yet, I'll find it for you.
My mission: Travel down I-65 and find all the fun things to do in Alabama, take pictures, take notes, and report back. This blog will be a big collection of The Best of Alabama, a file folder of great things to do and see right off the main drag, I-65. Stay tuned to discover fun ideas for weekend activites without even leaving the state!

*A note about Alabama beaches:
During times of crisis, it is important to remember not to rely on media outlets to get the facts. Find out for yourself. Don't assume you can't go to the beach because the national news reports the beaches are ruined. Be proactive in learning about the oil crisis. There are lots of places to read about the status of our beaches online, straight from the source. The Alabama Gulf Coast twitter account posts daily updates on the beaches and accounts from people who are vacationing there now. They also have a YouTube page that posts daily video blogs, showing the beaches, describing conditions and giving updates. Check them out for yourself!
